Phi Ta Khon: The Cloud Dancer
This character draws its inspiration from the grand Phi Ta Khon Festival in Thailand, with a design deeply rooted in nature and ancient beliefs. Rather than using vivid or bright colors, the character is adorned in a muted palette&mdash;earthy tones derived from natural sources. One of the most notable features is the hat, which pays homage to the traditional materials used in the past, such as coconut husks and bamboo. The outfit incorporates the iconic &ldquo;Pha Khao Ma,&rdquo; a traditional checkered cloth widely used in Northeastern Thai (Isan) culture.
The character is intentionally designed to appear aged, reflecting the traditional belief that only elder villagers were allowed to participate in the Phi Ta Khon procession. In the past, it was considered inappropriate for children to join in, as the event was deeply ceremonial and spiritual.
To enrich the design further, the creator blended elements of African tribal beliefs, which share striking similarities&mdash;particularly in their reverence for spirits, rituals, sacred objects, and symbolic aesthetics. This influence is most visible in the animal-inspired masks and the tribal-style tattoos. For example, buffalo horns are merged into the character&rsquo;s mask design. The buffalo was chosen for its symbolic association with Thai farmers and the rainy season, as the Phi Ta Khon festival is traditionally held to pray for rain. In fact, &ldquo;buffalo ghosts&rdquo; (kwai ta khon) are sometimes part of the festival, and it is believed that dressing as one can help ward off evil and bad luck from the village.
Ancient Southeast Asian body markings, such as Sak Kha Lai, a traditional tattoo style from Northern and Northeastern Thailand inspire the tattoos featured on the character. These tattoos were historically applied for spiritual protection, to mark social status, or to symbolize life transitions, strength, and resilience.

Lastly, the character&rsquo;s weapon design reflects the original Phi Ta Khon tradition, in which participants carried swords or axes&mdash;often with exaggerated phallic shapes at the tip. These phallic symbols represent fertility and the power of creation, closely tied to the belief that the more vibrantly the ritual is performed, the more rain will fall. The weapon also recalls the Naga (serpent deity) from the Phaya Thaen myth&mdash;a figure believed to send rain upon request from the heavens. This concept parallels the Rocket Festival (Bun Bang Fai), where rockets are launched skyward to call for rain, reinforcing the idea that this character embodies both ancient symbolism and cross-cultural reverence for nature&rsquo;s cycles.

ตัวละครตัวนี้ได้รับแรงบันดาลใจมาจากเทศกาลผีตาโขนอันยิ่งใหญ่ โดยมีการออกแบบที่เน้นความเป็นธรรมชาติและความเชื่อโบราณ เห็นได้จากการที่ตัวละครไม่ใช้สีที่สดและใช้สีที่น้อย เน้นสีที่ได้จากธรรมชาติ อีกตัวอย่างที่เห็นได้ชัดคือหมวก ที่อิงมาจากสมัยก่อนที่ผีตาโขนจะใช้กาบมะพร้าวและไม้ไผ่ และมีการใช้ผ้าขาวม้าซึ่งเป็นผ้าพื้นเมืองของคนอีสานเป็นเครื่องแต่งตัวของตัวละคร

ตัวละครนี้ออกแบบมาให้มีดูมีอายุ เพราะความเชื่อในสมัยก่อน การละเล่นผีตาโขนมีแต่คนมีอายุเล่น เพราะถ้าเป็นเด็กมาเล่นจะผิดจารีตที่เคยปฏิบัติมา นักออกแบบได้นำเอาความเป็นผีตาโขนสมัยเก่ามาผสมผสานกับความเชื่อของชนเผ่าแอฟริกา เนื่องจากมีความเชื่อคล้ายคลึงกัน โดยเฉพาะในเรื่องผี ของขลัง พิธีกรรม และเอกลักษณ์ที่สามารถพบเห็นในชนเผ่าแอฟริกา นั่นคือการทำหน้ากากเป็นสัตว์และรอยสักเป็นตัวเสริมในการออกแบบให้กับตัวละครตัวนี้ ตัวอย่างเช่น เขาควายมาผสมกับหน้ากากตัวละคร เหตุผลที่ใช้ควายนั้นเพราะว่าเทศกาลผีตาโขน มีขึ้นเพื่อที่จะขอฝนในช่วงฤดูแล้งเพื่อให้พืชผลนั้นได้น้ำ เลยนึกถึงควายเพราะเป็นสัตว์คู่กับชาวนา และในเทศกาลนั้นสามารถพบเห็นควายตาโขนได้ด้วยเช่นกัน โดยมีความเชื่อว่าถ้าแต่งตัวเป็นควายตาโขน ผีหรือความโชคร้ายจะไม่เข้ามาในหมู่บ้าน

ส่วนรอยสักได้ใช้รอยสักเก่าแก่ที่สามารถพบเห็นได้ในภาคเหนือและอีสานของประเทศไทย เช่น สักขาลาย ซึ่งเป็นรอยสักเก่าแก่ของชนเผ่าเอเชีย สักขาลายนั้นสักเพื่อความศักดิ์สิทธิ์ บางแบบสักเพื่อแสดงสถานะทางสังคม หรือเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของการเปลี่ยนผ่านชีวิต สัญลักษณ์ของความแข็งแกร่ง ความอดทน

สุดท้ายคืออาวุธ โดยดั้งเดิมแล้วผีตาโขนมีอาวุธเป็นได้ทั้งดาบหรือขวาน โดยตัวอาวุธปลายดาบนั้นจะต้องเป็นอวัยวะเพศชาย การใช้เครื่องเพศเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของการเกิดและความอุดมสมบูรณ์ เพราะชาวบ้านเชื่อว่าการเล่นนี้จะทำให้ฝนฟ้าตกต้องตามฤดูกาล และยิ่งเล่นมากเท่าไหร่น้ำฝนยิ่งมากขึ้นเท่านั้น และเพราะตัวอาวุธนั้นเหมือนเป็นสิ่งที่ช่วยในการขอฝน ทำให้นึกถึงพญานาคในเรื่องพญาแถน ที่พญานาคเป็นตัวในสัญญาณขอฝนให้แก่พญาแถน เหมือนกับประเพณีบั้งไฟพญานาค
